Home Servers
Home servers can be extremely helpful and powerful, even for average users. For example, we have a lot of experience with servers that connect to TiVo boxes to download content. The server then stores the show and adds it to a Plex server. The Plex server is a media server for TVs, iPads, iPhones, Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV so you can play shows on any of those devices.
Home servers can also be set up to do a variety of tasks that at first you might not realize you could use. You can have it check for mail and automatically process messages. Maybe you’d like it to act as a backup destination for your devices. One of the most useful cases is to have your own VPN servers so you know you can always browse the internet safely.
Network Attached Storage (NAS) Devices
One kind of server that is very popular is a NAS device such as a Synology that runs server software. These devices are very convenient and can do many of the tasks listed above and in some cases even more. Synology even has it’s own Cloud Station platform so you can use it to store photos and documents in a way similar to Dropbox but you’ll be totally in control of your data.
